IIST Astronomy and Astrophysics School is a comprehensive ten-day summer school organised by the Earth and Space Sciences department designed specifically for Master's students who are interested in pursuing a research career in Astronomy and Astrophysics. IIST has been conducting this school every year since 2012. The school is meant to acquaint students with the basics of astrophysics and an introduction to more advanced topics. 

The curriculum features rigorous lectures delivered by esteemed professors renowned for their dual expertise in teaching and research. Beyond theoretical classroom learning, the program heavily emphasizes practical application. Guided by both faculties and PhD scholars, students participate in hands-on lab sessions, gaining exposure to various astronomical softwares and data analysis tools used in the field.

Students who are moving to the final year of M.Sc./ Integrated MS in Physics or BTech in Engineering Physics are eligible to apply for the school. Since the number of candidates applying is much larger than the limited number of seats, the students are shortlisted via review process by the Local Organization Committee.

Ultimately, this intensive research-focused summer school helps Master's students solidify their foundational knowledge in Astrophysics and makes them confident enough to transition into doctoral programs in Astronomy and Astrophysics.
