Geo-Innovation Challenge

Dr Ramiya, Dept of Earth and Space Sciences, received funding support of Rs 3 Lakhs for conducting Geo-Innovation Challenge as part of National Geospatial Capacity Building program from Department of Science and Technology (DST). The theme of the conference was “Geospatial Technology: Geo-enabled technological solutions for realizing smart cities”.

As part of celebration of International day of light, on May 17, 2022, Applied and Adaptive Optics laboratory, Dept of Physics, organized lab visits and demonstrations for 60 students from various parts of Kerala.

IIST in collaboration with Pravaha Foundation, and Agastya International Foundation, Andhra Pradesh organized Episteme-2022, a 2-week immersive residential camp during 6-17 June 2022 in IIST, with a vision of identifying and harnessing India’s ‘Genius Dividend’. This camp was attended by specially abled school children from across the country.

Dr. Sarita Vig, Dept of Earth and Space Sciences, is a member of the Education and Public Outreach Committee (EPOC), since June 2022, for the National level COSMOS project, led by Indian Institute of Astrophysics to build a state-of-the-art Planetarium for the University of Mysuru, Mysore

IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (APS) Student Branch Chapter of IIST and Government Engineering College Barton Hill, Trivandrum have jointly established a smart classroom in Government Upper Primary School, Ponmudi Kerala in July, 2022. The facility , funded by COPE (Committee on Promotion of Equality) of IEEE AP-S was inaugurated by Prof. YVN Krishna Murthy and Prof. JY Siddiqui in presence of Prof. Chinmoy Saha, Prof. BS Manoj.

As part of SPIE/Optica student chapter, on August 27, 2022, Applied and Adaptive Optics laboratory, Dept of Physics, organized outreach programe for optics experimental demonstrations 8th -10th grade students of Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Nedumangad.

Prof. Sarita Vig, Dept of Earth and Space Sciences, represented India as a Team Leader at the XV International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) at Kutaisi, Georgia in August 2022. The team comprising of 5 students won 3 gold and 2 silver medals.

Prof. Sarita Vig, Dept of Earth and Space Sciences, is a member of the National Committee for International Astronomical Union's NameExoWorlds 2022 Contest - to select the official Indian entry of a host-star exoplanet name. The Committee met in Jan 2023 to finalise the Indian entries.

On the occasion of World Space Week, a 1-day workshop Nabh-Sparsh was organised by Prof. Sarita Vig, Dept of Earth and Space Sciences, for college students (Bachelors and Masters level) on 10 Oct 2022. Nearly 45 students (Bachelors and Masters in physics) from 11 Govt and Govt-aided colleges of Thiruvananthapuram participated in the workshop. The workshop included lectures, lab-visits and demonstration activities. The workshop was supported by sponsorship from the SERB project - Dept of Science and Technology (DST) of Dr. Sarita Vig and IIST.

Nirmaan is the social outreach club of IIST, with Prof. Lekshmi Nair, Dept of Humanities, as the faculty coordinator. Nirmaan organized science camps for the students of the Government UP School, Ponmudi every weekends from 13th August 2022 to 3rd December 2022 and a 3 day camp for the students of Villumala tribal settlement of Thenmala forest division from 31st December 2022 to 2nd January 2023. The later was organized in collaboration with the Forest department, Government of Kerala.
