The SAC houses multiple facilities that cater to the needs of the IIST student community. Yearly swimming training classes are arranged at Pirappancode international aquatic complexIIST students are grouped into five houses and regular inter-house tournaments are organised for various events, culminating in the annual sports meet.IIST has teams for Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball, Chess, Football and Badminton which participate regularly in inter-collegiate events

Sports and Fitness

A healthy, physically active student is more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. It also helps in building self-discipline and confidence of the student and promotes teamwork and sportsman spirit. To ensure an overall healthy development, IIST encourages the students to actively participate in various sports activities. At IIST, we have a regular program for students to train in various sports and fitness activities by well qualified physical education instructors.

Prof. Dipankar Banerjee,has taken charge as Director, IIST on 14 October 2024. He is an astrophysicist with a bachelor’s degree in physics (St. Xavier’s college) and master’s degree in Theoretical Physics from University of Kolkata. He has obtained his PhD from Indian Institute of Astrophysics and completed two postdoctoral tenures in reputed institutions in Europe. He served as Director, Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital from 2019-2024.

Advance Retarding Potential Analyser for Ionospheric Studies (ARIS)

ARIS (Advanced Retarding Potential Analyser for Ionospheric Studies) is an ionospheric plasma and electrostatic instrument developed by IIST for the structural and compositional studies of the ionosphere. Solar activity which is the main driver of the ionosphere can be studied in real-time by performing ion and electron density measurements in the ionosphere. Such measurements provide us with the warning of hazardous radiation effects on space assets, possible radiation exposure to aircraft crew and possible power grid disruptions.

Technology Transfer of Plasma treatment of steel surfaces to improve the wettability of ball-bearing systems to IISU.

Hard coatings for improving the lifetime of ballbearings in ISRO Spacecrafts: Under MoU with ISRO Inertail Systems Unit (IISU) for developing surface engineering techniques for improving the life and performance of ball-bearing systems in ISRO Spacecraft mechanisms. This mainly involves the studies on appropriate hard-coatings on ball-bearing systems in spacecrafts, and to study the surface energy modification techniques for improving the wettability of steel ball-bearing systems.

Small-spacecraft Systems and PAyload Centre (SSPACE)

Small-spacecraft Systems and PAyload Centre (SSPACE) is a center where the faculty members from multiple departments of the institute are actively involved in the development of spacecraft systems for small satellites and science payload. The core focus is to indegeneously develop subsystems for the small satellites for the On-board Computer System, Electrical Power Systems, Communication System, Attitude Determination and Control Systems, Structures and other related subsystems

Developed and Delivered halogen lamp based thermal excitation system to CMSE / ISRO

M/s Vashishtha Research Pvt Ltd., the startup company incubated under Department of Aerospace Engineering IIST (by one of our research students) has successfully developed and delivered a halogen lamp based thermal excitation system to CMSE/ ISRO. The system is capable of generating thermal loading profiles of step, sinusoidal, frequency modulated and coded excitation. The system also includes an indigenously developed lamp controller board and software GUI. It can be used for thermographic inspection of aerospace structures.

Developed and Delivered 4 Axis Filament Winding Machine to IIT Jammu

M/s Vashishtha Research Pvt Ltd., the startup company incubated under Department of Aerospace Engineering IIST (by one of our research students) has successfully developed and delivered a 4 axis filament winding machine to IIT Jammu. The machine is capable of winding mandrels up to 1.5m long and 0.4m in diameter at speeds of upto 20000 mm/min. It is capable of accommodating 6 spools with 1.5L heated resin bath. An indigenously developed filament winding pattern generation software is also supplied with the product.
